Post Office Helps Stamp Out Hunger

Mail carriers collect non-perishable food items on Saturday to benefit Island Harvest.

On Saturday, postal carriers will be collecting more than just letters from mailboxes. As part Island Havest’s Stamp Out Hunger Campaign, which aims to provide food to the needy, the postal carriers will be gathering non-perishable food items left in the mailboxes of their patrons.

"People can leave out canned goods, nothing glass, pastas, things like that," said Kings Park postal worker Brian Wagner.

"Residents should leave goods by their mailbox in something that isn't going to tear. Don't over pack, pack it like you would your groceries," said Wagner.

According to Island Harvest, all of the goods collected will be sent to soup kitchens and food banks across the island to help feed Long Island’s 285,000 people who face the risk of going hungry every day.
