A Kings Park grad, inspired by losing a family member to cancer, helped to launch an inaugural event for the American Cancer Society at her college.

Kristen Yanniello, of Kings Park helped to organize over 250 students and their supporters in an inaugural Relay for Life event, held at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, in Manhattan, that raised $21,000.

“Relay for Life is a fun way to do something charitable,” said. Yanniello. “It was amazing to have the whole campus – students, faculty and staff - rally together for a worthwhile cause.”

The event included a speech by New York Giants linebacker and cancer survivor, Mark Herzlich. Cancer survivors and their care-givers were honored with a special survivor ceremony lap. Later in the evening, participants memorialized loved ones lost to cancer through the candle-lit luminaria ceremony.
