Voters Guide: What You Need to Know for Tuesday's Vote

Where to Vote

Residents can vote on Tuesday, May 17 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the R.J.O. Intermediate School Gymnasium.

 School Budget Information

On Tuesday residents will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed 2011-2012-school budget.

Spending will increase by 1.74% with a tax levy of 2.92%. The actual tax rate will be set by the Town of Smithtown tax assessor, which is done in the fall.

The district lost $1.3 million in state aid. Kings Park faced a $1.3 million cut in state aid as as well as a gap of $2.5 million due to in part to mandated costs such as health care and pensions.

23.5 teaching positions were eliminated, 12 of which, according to the district were due to decreasing enrollment, while 11.5 were budget related.

According to the district no programs have been cut and full-day kindergarten is intact.

Proposition #2

Voters will have the opportunity to vote to authorize spending out of the capital reserve fund for the replacement of the roof at R.J.O. Intermediate School with a cost not to exceed $1,100,000.

Board of Trustee Elections

Board Vice President Marie Goldstein is up for re-election and is running uncontested. Each term is three years.
