School District Continues to Review, Update Security Procedures

District administrators recently hired two full-time security guards.

Security procedures in Kings Park Schools continue to be analyzed and updated by school officials in the wake of the Newtown tragedy.

Over the last few weeks, the district has reviewed procedures with administrators, conducted lockdown drills and hired additional guards. Addditional cameras have been ordered and are being installed in schools and on buses.

“We are checking identification, even if we know you,” said Agruso at a January board meeting. “It’s a heightened time of awareness.”

The district recently took the step of sending three of its staff members to a security training seminar offered by the Suffolk County police, where police officials offered guidance to school administrators on enhancing their current security strategy. 

School officials also added two retired police officers as full time guards for the district.

“We are replacing and adding cameras and we would like to get additional funding for GPS,” said Agruso, who anticipates some of that money will come from a bump in building aid through a new bill from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
