Kings Park Education Foundation recognizes Massimo at annual fundraising event.

The Kings Park Education Foundation at the group's annual fundraising event, which took place on November 19th,  named  R.J.O. Intermediate School Principal, Rudy Massimo Educator of the Year.

The semi-formal affair titled, A Night in Monte Carlo, took place at the Watermill in Smithtown.  This was Massimo's first time being nominated.

"I've never been to a school where they applaud the principal so highly," said KPEF treasurer Steve Fling.

Massimo, a father of two began his teaching career in the New York City school system where he met his wife Valerie. He served three years as assistant principal in Kings Park High School and then went on to become principal at R.J.O. Intermediate School where he has been for the past nine years.

Massimo focuses on  building rapport with staff, parents, and members of the community to give learning opportunities to students while still keeping it fun. One such way he does this is by working closely with Leo Ostebo, caretaker of the Kings Park Heritage Museum. Together they develop themes for lessons on specific eras of Kings Park history.

He was also recently able to have an assembly for students with Mark Wood, a Long Island native and violinist in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Massimo is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get dirty when coverage is tight for the staff. Massimo can often be seen stepping into classrooms to take charge, or even taking on lunch aide duty in the cafeteria among throngs of fourth and fifth grade students.

The congenial principal takes it all in stride." Being with the kids is the favorite part of my day."

Massimo is grateful for the award, but believes he shouldn't be the only one to get recognition.

"It's for the staff," said Massimo. "The only reason I received the award is because I work with a great group of people.  I am what I am because of them."

The goal of the KPEF is to support students with monetary gifts and resources that help to enrich their academic and recreational experience.  Thus far, the KPEF, which is comprised of community members, school district staff and PTA members, has donated Smart Boards, Proxima Projectors and musical instruments, among  other big-ticket items needed by schools.

Mr. Steve Cannata of Smithtown Toyota was also recognized for his support of the KPEF and given a "Partnership in Education" award.

In addition to the staff of R.J.O, Massimo also thanks the Parent Faculty Organization.  Together, he said they show how fantastic a community  Kings Park is.

"Everybody is there for everyone else," said Massimo. "This building is my home.  These kids are my children."
