Profile: Board of Education Trustee Liz Barrett

Patch speaks with flight attendant and mom of three, Liz Barrett.

Patch is conducting a series of profiles on each board member in the days leading up to the May 17

Liz Barrett, flight attendant for American Airlines, wife and mom of three says she has enjoyed her first year as a trustee on the board. Barrett and her husband grew up in Kings Park, her husband in the San Remo section. Her three children, daughters Meghan, 15, Kelly, 12 and son Kevin, age six; attend school in the Kings Park district.

“Growing up in Kings Park, I felt I could really make a difference,” says Barrett a 1986 graduate of. “I am a mom in three different schools and I can be a voice for the parents.”

Barrett says the toughest issue facing the residents this year is maintaining a high standard of education while keeping it at an affordable cost to the taxpayer.

“We have had significant government cuts. We need to try to work with what we have and try to balance everything that we need with what we have,” she said.

As far as what Barrett thinks is the toughest issue facing the board she says it is keeping an eye on what is important for the children and what taxpayers can afford.

“People are losing jobs and homes and we need to keep an eye on what is important to the kids. We want to move forward with technology and take the burden off the tax payers too,” said Barrett. “We need to work together as a community to get through these tough times while keeping the kids in mind.”
