Barrett on Her Resignation: 'I Have Been Targeted'

Kings Park Board of Education trustee gives her reasons for resigning from her elected position.

Kings Park Trustee Liz Barrett has resigned her position from the school district's Board of Education on Tuesday afternoon amid a storm of controversy.

Barrett submitted a formal written resignation from her position on Kings Park Board of Education on Tuesday afternoon as allegations were brought forth by a district employee that she allegedly publicly discussed his employment status.

Barrett gave her statement of resignation as published below:

It was with a heavy heart that I rendered my resignation to the Kings Park Central School District Board of Education.

I believe the current climate of the board was counterproductive to both the taxpayers and the students of Kings Park; there are many pressing education issues that must be dealt with and need the undivided attention of the Board of Education. Since voting not to extend the contract of our Superintendent I believe as though I have been targeted with mean spirited, baseless political attacks on myself, my family and those who support my efforts.

After careful thought and consideration
I have decided to refocus all of my energy and my entire efforts on my family. I will continue to support our district as a community member and an education advocate. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the voters of Kings Park for their support as it has meant a great deal to me. I wish continued success for the Kings Park Central School Districts Students and the Kings Park community.

Barrett was first elected to board in 2010, and was unanimously voted to the position of vice president for the 2012-2013 school year.

In May 2013, Barrett was re-elected to a three-year term on Kings Park Board of Education receiving 1,349 votes - the highest number of received by an of the four candidates on the ballot.
