3 Men Rescued From LI Sound in Rocky Point
Three men were pulled from the Long Island Sound near Rocky Point Wednesday evening after their canoe capsized, Suffolk County Police said.
The victims, brothers Edwin Arevalo, 24, and Jose Arevalo, 28, along with their friend Moises Guevara, 35, all of Case Avenue in Patchogue, were transported to John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson and treated for hypothermia.
Port Jefferson School District Mourns BOE Member's Passing
Residents of the village and the Port Jefferson School District are mourning the passing of one of their own after Isak Prohovnik died suddenly earlier this week. Prohovnik was elected to the school board in 2011 and was a professor of Psychiatry and Radiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
Man Killed by Train in St. James
A man died in St. James on Tuesday after he was struck by a full eastbound train approaching the station platform, Metropolitan Transportation Authority police said.
Detective Sergeant Kim Riley of the MTA Police said the man was hit by the train at 12:20 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the Lake Avenue station when officers arrived.
"It appears he was on the platform," Riley said.
Murphy Family Supports Efforts for National Day of Grieving
For Missy Murphy and her family, there are good days and bad days. Sometimes she is able to think about her 13-year-old son Andrew, whom she lost to suicide earlier this year, and smile. But other times, she said, it's unbearably difficult.
That's why she is seeking the community's support for a national petition to establish a "National Day of Grieving." She said establishing such a day would mean so much to her family. "People have a right to grieve," said Murphy, whose family lives in Stony Brook. "It’s a process that there is no time limit on. Everybody grieves differently and experiences loss differently."
The petition can be found by clicking here. Signing the petition requires a quick log-in process. So far, the petition has fewer than 400 signatures, but it needs 25,000 people to sign by Nov. 2 in order for the Obama administration to consider acting on it.
