Mother Nature Alters Course of Winter Run Series

Damage caused by Sandy removes Robert Moses and Jones Beach State Park as venues for the Long Island Winter Run Series.

Mother Nature has altered the course of this year's Winter Run Series, hosted by the Long Island Park Region, and will not include Jones Beach or Robert Moses State Parks, due to the aftermath left by superstorm Sandy.

The series will begin on Jan. 13 at Heckscher State Park and will include Sunken Meadow State Park, which has only been used in the summer for the past few years.

"Sunken Meadow is a very able substitute for the Robert Moses run," said Deputy Director of Parks Brian Foley. "Given what's happened along Ocean Parkway, it made sense to move the series more to the north shore parks rather than the south shore."

Foley said it is too soon to tell if parks damaged by Sandy will be ready in time for the Summer Run Series, which begins in June.

  • Jan. 13- Heckscher State Park
  • Jan. 20- Sunken Meadow State Park
  • Jan. 27- Caumsett State Park.

All races begin at 11 a.m.

For an application, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Winter Run Series, P.O. Box 247, Babylon, NY 11702 or register online for full series and single races at www.flrrt.com or www.active.com

Apparently you are not the only one this is happening to. From what I understand if these signs areRead More on a main drag somehow they are disappearing in the middle of the night. Hmmm, now I wonder who or what organization could be doing this illegal act? I'm not going to make an educated guess who could be involverd in this deed but I think if Kings Parkers do some research they are smart enough to figure out who does not want the real facts of the "Uplands Project" to come to light. Displaying these signs is a way of making the public aware of the atrocity of this project. Questions will then be asked. Making a night run to remove them is, at the least, a cowardly act that should be publicized every time it occurs!
