Pro-Life Local: Chuck Schumer Had No Place Marching in St. Pat's Parade

Fort Salonga resident Ann Cook, says her organization was denied to march in the parade, says Schumer had no place there.

This letter written by Fort Salonga resident, Ann Cook.

Dear Editor:

I found it interesting that Senator Charles Schumer marched in the Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 2, 2013. I understand that we should respect his office, however, he is extremely pro-abortion and although the parade is not “Catholic,” it is in honor of a Catholic Saint.

Senator Schumer is not a “local” politician and he certainly is no friend of Catholics as he supports the HHS mandate, which violates the constitutional freedoms of the Catholic Church, and there is also the public contradiction that Catholics, who consider themselves faithful to the teachings of the Church, have participated in an event (this parade) that gave publicity and honored recognition to a politician who is opposed to respecting the constitutional freedoms of the Church and also the Church’s core teaching on protecting innocent and defenseless human life.

Fellow pro-life Catholics and I have asked the parade committee for permission to march with a pro-life banner in the parade and have been denied twice. We were told even if we marched with another group in the parade, we could not carry a pro-life tote or button. They say “pro-life” is political and controversial. I say it is a civil right. Being politically correct usually is not being correct at all.

Perhaps the committee should be more discretionary in whom they allow to march in their parade.

Sincerely,

Ann Cook, Ft. Salonga
