Kings Park Hospital Documentary Previewed in Film Festival

A once suicidal teenager turned veteran filmmaker takes an in depth look at the hospital and mental illness.

A once suicidal teenager who was committed to the Kings Park Psychiatric Hospital will preview her film, Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution at this summer’s

Director of the film, Lucy Winer, who is now a veteran documentary filmmaker was committed in 1967 to the hospital’s female violent ward. Winer documents not only her journey back to the now shuttered facility but also meets with former patients, their families and hospital staff. The film takes an in-depth look at the mental health system today as well as a look back on the treatment of the illness in years past. The film, much of which was shot on hospital grounds, will be shown during the ten day festival at the univerity's  Staller Center for the Arts on July 25.
