Derailment To Affect LIRR Service Through Wednesday

Trains to run on "significantly reduced" afternoon and evening schedule.

Sunday's Amtrak derailment in an East River tunnel due to a broken rail will affect the Long Island Rail Road train schedule from Penn Station "at least through Wednesday," according to the Mass Transit Authority. The schedule changes include the cancellation of two eastbound trains on the Port Jefferson line.

Of 126 trains that run east from Penn Station during the afternoon/evening rush period, 20 will not run until further notice. The 3:27 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. trains to Huntington are among those cancellations. The MTA noted that passengers should expect a 10- to 20-minute delay on departures from Penn Station and for extra stops to be made to accommodate those with stops on the cancelled trains.

In addition to alterations to the Port Jefferson schedule, trains to stations on the Babylon, Long Beach, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches were also affected. Passengers can receive updates by calling 718-217-LIRR or by visiting the Long Island Rail Road website.
