Demolition Begins Monday at Former Psych Center

Building 123 will be the first structure to come down.

 

begins at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center on Monday starting with Building 123, which housed a kitchen and dining room.

Work up to now has largely been remediation and asbestos removal. This will be the first structure to come down. A total of 19 structures are slated to be demolished.

A website to inform the public about progress at the site has been established. The site, kppccleanup.com, is run by the by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and will serve as a communication hub for what is happening during the clean-up process.

One of my favorite buildings especially when I walk or ride my bike in the park. It won't be the same anymore. :(

What a huge mistake. We are all so myopic and no longer want to own our past. One of the last historical living records of mental health history in the United States and all most of us see is an eyesore. Sad.

I totally agree with these people, we are destroying some very important history of Long Island. Just the architecture of these buildings shows how much we have lost with our impersonal structures that are built today.

Sorry folks, if you wanted to save these buildings, it should have started a long time ago. These places are extremely dangerous, and obviously it's really tough to police such a large piece of property with so many buildings. Not only are trespassers in danger, but when they get stuck (and they have) you're also putting your first responders in danger. Hopefully something good comes with this property. There is a lot of potential there.
