Off-Track Betting ‘Qwik Bets’ Hits Main Street Pub

Local pub adds Qwik Bet machines and sees promising returns.

owner Scott McKinnon sees the latest addition to his business as a sure fire bet-Qwik Bet, that is.

When OTB filed for bankruptcy last March it expanded Internet betting operations and doubled the number of betting machines known as Qwik Bet. Patrons who don't wish to travel to the Hauppauge OTB can place bets at Main Street.

"The way the economy has been going the last few years, I am very fortunate to have Qwik Bet in my establishment," said McKinnon. "It really helps out."

According to OTB spokeswoman, Debbie Pfieffer, adding Qwik Bet locations at neighborhood bars ss part of their reorganization. Pfeiffer.

“We’ve made a big push with the Qwik Bet, since we did have to close a number of branches last year, so folks can still wager especially on the big race days,” she said. “Our employees will be available on those big days to help first-time betters — we don’t want people to be intimidated by these machines.”

All the bartender has to do it give the customer a cash voucher from a machine at the bar, then the voucher is used to make the bet at the Qwik Bet machines located at the end of the far end of the barroom.

"My experience with Qwik Bet and Suffolk County OTB has been a huge success for the customers and my the pub," said McKinnon. "The Qwik Bet machines are self-service, user friendly. You can bet seven days a week from noon to midnight, get the current odds and bet all different tracks around the country with simulcast racing," he said.

Southampton Publick House has had Qwik Bet available in their taproom for almost a year now and owner Don Sullivan said it fits in perfectly.

“Our taproom is geared toward a sports theme, so I don’t think they’re out of place,” he said. “They have a subtle impact — we don’t run it all night long. Some people place a few bets and stay for a drink or a bite to eat, others bet and then leave. It’s no different that any other major sport — it brings people in.”

McKinnon sees the addtion as a boost to business.

"Its a draw for the business, also they bet the horses, eat, drink and tend to stay a lot longer because of the Qwik Bet," he said.

Newsworthy cuz OTB NYC went belly up last year.Suffolk OTB is trying to cut costs n remain viable by relying more on Kwikbet locations.Suffolk OTB employs people on long island n kicks back money to NYS to fund programs. The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday n Main St.Pub is the only place in KP to bet n watch Kentucky Derby.A more well constructed, informative article,Perhaps but baseless slander,NO!

Yea this will HELP Main street in Kings Park....And I am not a competitor, I actual live a few houses away from this dive--where all the drunk people park in front of my home and fight and vomit on my lawn--but gambling will differently help....Any one want to buy my house????

How convenient that "Sam the neighbor" joined the patch today like the other Slanderers. If it was such a problem wth fights, people getting sick and illegally parking,Why didn't ya call the cops.ANSWER: it never happened.More anonymous slanderers stirring the pot.At least Melissa has a point of view which u can agree or disagree wth.She simply doesn't think the article has a point or was necessary.

For the record, I can see how the OTB moving into bars with kwikbet locations to stay afloat as a company is newsworthy from a business story perspective, I CANNOT see how it specifically moving into this specific bar on Main St - which most KPers know not to go to.......is newsworthy. The reputation of this bar precedes itself and this probably doesn't do much to help it.

Et Tu Melissa McDougal. That's the pot calling the kettle Black. And not true for the record.Your sour grapes is sickening.

I also don't think its cool that anyone can go on this website and voice their opinions making it look like it is or could be someone else-- now that i am reading these, how convenient there is a 'Melissa' and a 'J-Mac' ----If I ever have something to say, it would not be a cowardly anonymous. Business is business, I do not see any other bar as 'competition' and am absolutely not sour of Main Street Pub. If I wanted to get Quik Bet in my establishment, I would. So DO NOT misrepresent me or anything I stand for. I stand behind EVERY thought, comment or statement I say or write.
melissa May 03, 2012 at 11:18 PM
not a competitor either, just an old KPer

Ur speedy response belies ur protest of innocence. However, one must now take u at ur word.Any luck or appologies should not be directed toward me but the guy,Scott quoted in the "newsworthy" article.
melissa May 03, 2012 at 11:19 PM
there ARE other people named Melissa in Kings Park - just a coincidence
Melissa Dispigno Macdougall May 03, 2012 at 11:26 PM
I am not apologizing for anything. I didn't say anything hurtful about Main Street. If 'Melissa' was me, I would not be defending myself. I don't care if you believe me or take my word. I saw 'JJ' smear MY name and I will not stand by while you ANONYMOUSLY trash me and or my business. and thank you 'melissa' for backing me up.. i appreciate it.
melissa May 03, 2012 at 11:29 PM
No problem. I don't know what else to say to him, it also just happens to be my name, as well. Not much you or I can do about having the same name and being from the same town. He can take it up with our parents, I guess?

First off, I take offence that you are saying I am lying...why would I want to bring attention to the bad location of my home if I am trying to sell it if it wasn't true? Where is your parking, if it isn't on Henry Street??? I should have looked at my home at night before I bought it. Anomouse dam right...I am a middle aged woman with 3 kids, yea I want you all to know who I am and exactly where I live that will go over well--seeing your reaction on this post. I can't understand how you can be defending this bar so adamantly---if you are the owner OPEN your eyes and and READ what people are saying and thinking of your bar and DO something about it!!! Fix it up---I am sorry you are not doing well, but I can see by your reactions that you have become blind to what is around you. And if you are the owner, can you please for heavens sake LOWER the freaken music---I can't sleep with my windows open during the summer--or at least close the dam door when people are smoking at the side door. Oh and the police---I have called the precint many many times when I first moved in---they do nothing but drive by---AND I GIVE UP---This is why I am leaving I can't raise my kids in this town. And it is not just becuase of your bar, its all the SROs up and down main street-- I know we are going to take like a 70,000 hit.....but that is ok....YOUR business is more important that everyone who lives around you ---a little narcissistic don't you think.
