Moms Talk Q&A: How Do You Cure the Winter Time Blues?

Local mom Debbie Danley is looking for some ideas to cure cabin fever.

Some years we choose President’s Week to take a family vacation and other years we hang at home and stay-cation. I find by the time February break rolls around the kid’s cabin fever is at their max and we need to keep busy to avoid the winter blues. This year my family did not vacation and we are trying to spice things up and keep busy close to home.

I’ve reached out to several friends trying to spark some fun, budget friendly ideas that  make the long winter days seem just a tad bit shorter. Sometimes I feel like I’ve done it all but it never fails someone always offers a new idea that is sure to please both parents and children alike.

We are only a few days into the school break and we’ve made a lot of plans and have done a few new, fun things. Yesterday we remedied my daughter’s fever, that’s Bieber Fever, by visiting for the matinee 3D show, Never Say Never. It was a huge hit. Elwood Movie Theater is my favorite local theater. They have great ticket prices, and it’s a small, family friendly theater. We usually take in a show and walk just a few store fronts down for delicious pizza and Italian fare at Torcello's.

Today instead of making day long plans the kids had a blast just going out for lunch at Izumi Hibachi Restaurant located in Commack. They have great lunch prices and mid day your able to avoid  crowds you can often encounter in the midst of dinner time. The table side chef was built in entertainment. We opted for a fun lunch followed by playdates while I played catch up on household chores.

Tomorrow is up in the air. I am sure after soliciting ideas we will come up with something fun but I am looking for low key because we will be ending the week with a blast. Thursday we are heading up to Tuxedo, New York for Snow Tubing and Skiing.

Tubing is a really fun activity that requires no skill and not much guts. Sterling Forest is my favorite tubing/ski spot but keep in mind I am seeking out easy courses for the amateur skier. Its especially nice that after a two hour drive we can be sitting in a tube sailing down a mountain. Snow Tubing is a budget friendly activity. A two hour pass can be purchased for around $25 per rider.

So how do you cure the winter time blues or avoid the dreaded words…..”Mom, there is nothing to do?” We know on Long Island, we are surrounded by culture with so much to do but where do you start?
