Columbus Day 2013: What's Open, What's Closed

National holiday closes schools, government offices on Monday.

Monday is Columbus Day, observed as a public holiday in most states, including New York. It is named for explorer Christopher Columbus and has grown into a celebration of Italian-American heritage.

Here's a list of what's open and what's closed this Columbus Day: 

  • All Kings Park students have Monday off at Kings Park Central School District is closed. 

  • The Kings Park branch of the Smithtown Special Library District is closed in observance of the holiday. 

  • On Long Island, all federal, state and local government offices are closed, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and the county courts.

  • Town of Smithtown offices are closed, but many town parks and public facilities are open. 

  • There is no U.S. Postal Service delivery and only minimal postal services are available.

  • Some banks are closed, but have the option to stay open.

  • The Long Island Rail Road generally operates on a normal schedule on Columbus Day.
