#83 – Canoeing or Kayaking the Nissequogue River

Experience the beauty of the river and shoreline in a most unique way.

Canoeing or kayaking is a perfect way to explore the breathtaking beauty of the Nissequogue River, its shoreline and the extraordinary wildlife that call this river home.

For nature enthusiasts, paddling the Nissequogue can be a special experience. It offers freedom and range that can be lacking from the river’s edge. The river is home to such species as the piping plover, common tern, American black duck, clapper rail, osprey, herons and egrets.

Fishing this tidal river from a kayak or canoe can also be very rewarding. There are both fresh water and saltwater fishing. Trout can be found in the upper portions of the river, while the lower end can hold striped bass, bluefish and winter flounder.

Along with experiencing the beauty of the river and connecting with nature, paddling is a great way to get or keep in shape. It provides aerobic and cardiovascular exercise, while strengthening the upper body. From the casual kayaker, leisurely moving along the river, to the more serious sportsman, paddling is good for your health.

The scenic trip from one end of the river to the other is about a 5 ½ mile journey and takes approximately two hours. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and picnic or just rest along the way.

If you own a kayak or canoe, it can be launched at several locations, including the Nissequogue River State Park, the Kings Park Bluff and Paul T. Given County Park.

Kayaks and canoes can also be rented through Nissequogue River Canoe and Kayak Rentals or Bob’s Canoe Rentals. A bus will transport you back to your car once you’ve reached your destination.

(3) Wear sun block in the warmer months, protective footwear and make sure to pack plenty of drinks. (4) Always wear a life jacket, and (5) don’t forget the camera.

Reservations suggested for rentals, especially on weekends. Call ahead to get tide information.
