Board of Ed Approves New Texting/Social Media Policy

New student code of conduct includes penalties for inappropriate texting/social media use and bullying.

Kings Park school officials hope tougher penalties for inappropriate texting and social media use will serve as a deterrent to stop students.

The Kings Park Board of Education unanimously approved changes to its students code of conduct focusing on inappropriate use of social media tools, texting and cell phone use, at its June 25 board meeting, Newsday reports.

Students who are found to be inappropriately texting or using social media will now face penalties that in some instances could include one to five days of school suspension, losing the ability to earn a Regents diploma or removal from all honor societies.

"The building principal has the ultimate responsibility in the building of what discipline will be administered,” assistant superintendent Ralph Cartisano told Newsday. “These are suggestions. Every case is different.”
