Homebody: Photo Tip, #9: "It Worked For Me:" Cable Release

Another piece of essential equipment to have is a cable release.  Especially if you have a DSLR, or an advanced point and shoot camera.

The cable release plugs into the camera and allows you to fire the shutter without touching the camera body itself.  This reduces the chance that the picture will be blurred by pressing the shutter button on the camera.

You can use the camera’s self-timer for the same purpose, but this is not effective when shooting action shots such as fireworks displays.  A cable release will  also be able to lock the shutter open so that you can take really long exposures.

Since I shoot a lot with a tripod, I usually just leave the cable release on the camera.  The accompanying photo, “Untitled,” was taken using a cable release.  The location was on the LI Sound in Ft. Salonga and the long exposure smoothes out the small waves but captures a bit of the “breakers” hitting the shore.  (Settings are 5 seconds @ f/22, ISO 100.)

Kings Park Photo Club:  Next meeting is Thursday, July 18th, 2013, 7 PM, at the Kings Park Library.  Fellow Patch Blogger and club member Agnes Fegan will talk about her work with textures and Lens Babies (soft-focus lenses).  Check out Agnes’s blog, “The Aggies,” on Patch, for examples of local pictures in her unique and beautiful style.
