Bow Wow Treasures Packs Up Shop

After five years, owner said not enough local traffic coming in to store.

As one shop owner says it is time to move on.

Bow Wow Treasures, a thrift shop dedicated to raising money to open a local animal shelter said that the Kings Park location is just not working and is in the process of looking to rent in nearby towns where he said the majority of the store’s donations and customers come from.

“Our best donations come from surrounding towns like Northport, St. James and Fort Salonga,” said owner Peter Brecka. “Less than 14 percent of our business comes from Kings Park.”

Brecka, said the lack of business has stalled the main purpose of the store; to open a no-kill animal shelter.

“We have terrific stuff, much of it high end and new,” he said. Brecka also cited what he sees as a rundown downtown area as a contributing factor in his decision to leave and said he hopes that will change, but added “who can afford to wait?”

The store will close its location by Feb. 15. Brecka said customers can continue to come into the store until then. Signs will be hung in the window announcing the new location when it is found.

“It’s time,” said Brecka. “I think we will do better somewhere else.”
