Gene graduated from Stony Brook University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. He is currently a contributor for the newly launched New York Hockey Journal  as well as the Long Island Ultimate Athlete. He has previously freelanced for the Syracuse Post-Standard, and contributed to Newsday.com's mixed martial arts blog.
While on campus he served as Sports Editor of the Stony Brook Statesman and was a staff writer for the Stony Brook Independent, an online campus publication.
