Spotlight: Back To School Night Food Drives

Current and retired teachers collect for food bank.

The Long Island Anti-Hunger Task Force reports that nearly 300,000 Long island residents – an estimated one in ten – rely on food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency food programs for their nutritional needs.

In an effort to help local families during these challenging economic times, The Kings Park Classroom Teachers Association and the Kings Park Retired Teachers Association are holding a series of food drives during the district’s .

“This is the third year that the Kings Park Retired Teachers Association and the Kings Park Classroom Teachers have asked the community to bring food items for the needy families of Kings Park,” says Jim Pappas, president of the Kings Park Classroom Teachers Association.

“The first two years were successful, bringing in over fifty boxes of food each year,” Pappas notes. “It's another chance for all of us to give back.”

Parents are invited to bring nonperishable food items to Back To School Night and the collected food will be distributed to local families through the Kings Park High School Food Bank.

The following is the Kings Park School District’s Back To School Night schedule:

 

Park View Elementary School - September 12 - 6:00 p.m.

William T. Rogers Middle School - September 14 - 7:00 p.m.

Fort Salonga Elementary School - September 19 - 6:00 p.m.

RJO Intermediate School - September 20 - Grade 5 – 6:00 p.m. / Grade 4 – 8:00 p.m.

Kings Park High School - September 27 - 7:00 p.m.
