A new tenant may fill the space left vacant by New Discovery Early Childhood Center in the Kings Park School District’s administration building on Lawrence Avenue.
The Kings Park Board of Education will vote on a resolution Tuesday evening whether or not to approve a lease for a new childcare facility called New Beginnings.
Sylvia Bastone, owner of New Beginnings, presented the proposal to the board at last Tuesday evening’s meeting. Bastone worked for New Discovery as the education director.
District superintendent, Susan Agruso said there is a lease agreement, but it is not yet signed.
“The board will have conversation about it and see if the rent is acceptable, so we will see where it will go,” said Agruso in a phone conversation.
Bastone said the center would provide childcare for infants and preschool children as well as offer before and after school care for children already in school.
Bastone told the board that she has spent more than 20 years in the field and believes the center would be a good fit for the space.
The board is expected to vote on the resolution at the Tuesday evening meeting. Patch will keep you informed of the results.

How convenient. This whole thing stinks of typical Kings Park politics...
The former tenant was "evicted" for non payment of rent.
If this was the case, a vacant building or storefront would never get a new tenant. It is how business moves forward. The failure of the past doesnt predict the future.
Is the new lease agreement with New Beginnings going to be for the same or more monthly as compared to what New Discovery's lease agreement was? Or less? If less, than why couldn't the school board have been able to find a way to reconfigure a new lease agreement (including a loan agreement if necessary for repayment of any overdue monies) with New Discovery in order to allow for a means for that long-time business to continue to operate there? As anyone who inquires with the Child Care Council of Suffolk County (located in Commack) would learn there are many child care centers that have closed down due to lower enrollments (due to poor economy among other reasons). That being said, how is it that New Beginnings will be able to offer child care at the same or similarly competitive (or dare say lower) rates as compared to what New Discovery had charged. Or, is it that their lease will force them to now have to consequently charge more (in these tough economic times) than what New Discovery had charged?
NEW DISCOVERY IS DONE! Time to get over it. All these concerns about New Beginnings carrying the reputation we grew to love will come forward once they open. And yes, hard economical times has gotten so many people stirred up which is understandable. We need to stay focused on our priorities which should be our children and KEEPING the teachers who not only teach as part of their job, but teach because they have the gift of virtue in their hearts. If we can put all this energy into the stuff that doesn't matter, then imagine if people started focusing on moving forward to improving things...just imagine. Nobody says you have to enroll your child in New Beginnings if it's not to your liking or can't afford it. There are other schools who have more affordable packages.
I didn't even bring anything about those aspects anyway (nor about New Beginnings' reputation) since I do not dispute these things and my questions does not have to do with those things. The rates that were charged by New Discovery vs what is to be charged by New Beginnings as they relate to the prior lease vs the new lease that the school board agreed to and oversaw (on behalf of taxpayers) is what is still at question here along with the particulars of each lease. As a taxpaying homeowner in the KP district, with having had to pay child care costs, and with having someone in my household who has recently become unemployed ironically from another closed child care center no less, gives me every right to raise such valid concerns since rates that are offered does potentially negatively impact us and our ability to "move forward", regardless if you erroneously choose to think otherwise.
Let me ask you this - if you get answers to your questions, how will that change the situation? You didn't bring any of my questionable aspects to the table, but they are important parts of the equation that do get factored in.
I tell you what, it's buffalo dung the whole thing. One office manager tossed out the other manager like yesterday's order of soggy fries on a 1970s Convention ad for Schwinn Bicycles. I know how them tricks work. Before I moved to KP, I lived down there in Virginia. Down south we learned how recognize the difference between cow crap and rotten skunk. One is much worse, I don't like what I smell between neither....yepp. No sirr...
Thanks for clearing things up. That was sooo helpful and enlightening. Now nobody is wondering about any of this anymore.
Next blog.......
Instead of focusing on the legitimate concerns brought up and coming up with an intelligent response that talks anything about the topic at hand, no, instead you try to divert attention away from that by focusing on...........nonsense. Typical. Grow up and, for the sake of anyone who would be graced by your obvious all-knowing presence on any blogs, do them all a favor and try to get educated. From what you are apparently inferring, finding some food for one's self will solve everything. Whatever. Just keep feeding your face some more crap - that is obviously what you must be good at since you are so focused on food. Here's some food for thought - Nobody cares what the heck you want to eat, nor what various culinary terms and cliches you wish to throw out there.
By golly, gee whilikers, WTF are you even talking about? Gosh darnit, I have to admit, I don't understand imbecile lingo, nor do want to. And what exactly is your helpful contribution to the topic other than entertaining everyone by talking like some backwoods, inbred hick whose favorite movie is probably Deliverance? It's not about me and you know it. Again trying to divert attention away from the topic at hand while at the same time not providing any useful input. Regardless if you wish to erroneously choose to think otherwise (since it's not all about you or about how you wish to misinterpret or misconstrue things to suit your allegations or justifications), the fact is that it is as I've said all along - it's all about transparency and flow of information and full disclosure to taxpayers (or lack thereof), plain & simple. Nothing more. Ever go to school and learn how to engage in a civil conversation? Nah, too busy playing stuff the chicken back on the farm. Time to stop making the pigs squeal and go back to the cookie jar and have some cookies with your goat milk before taking that baby nap and dream about sheep.
