School District Notifies Community of Registered Sex Offender

The Kings Park School District has placed a letter on its website notifying residents that a Level 1 sex offender is residing in the Kings Park community.

School officials have been notified that a Level 1 sex offender is residing in the Kings Park area.

A notification has been placed on the district website indicating that the offender lives in the zip code area of 11754.

According to the New York State Criminal Justice Services website, Level 1 offenders are at low risk of a repeat offense and must register for 20 years. In accordance with the law, information on Level 1 sex offenders are barred from being posted on the site, including the address at which they reside.

The district web posting said information is available upon request and must be picked up in person and is available at any school building.

According to  a search on Feb. 4 of the New York State Sex Offender Registry, there is currently one Level 3 sex offender residing in the Kings Park zip code of 11754.

Laws prohibit the distribution of the addresses of Level 1 sex offenders, but a searchable database of Level 2 and Level 3 offenders is available via the New York State Public Registry of Sex Offenders.

Below is the letter posted on the school district's website:

We have been notified that a Level 1 sex offender is residing in the Kings Park zip code area of 11754. The information is available to you upon request. This information must be picked up in person and is available at any school building. You will be asked to provide your name and address and to provide some means of identification. This is to ensure that the school district takes the utmost care in providing information only to parties with a vested interest.

Information about the Sex Offender Registration act may also be viewed on the New York State Department of Criminal Justice website at www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us.

It is unfortunate, but necessary that we all take this opportunity to review safety rules with our children and remind them to avoid circumstances which might increase their vulnerability. Please help your children keep this in the proper perspective by reassuring them that ours is a very safe community, but that in this day and age, everyone needs to be alert and careful.
