Motherway Says Farewell After Six Years on KP Board of Ed

Kings Park Board of Education President, Bill Motherway, tells the Times of Smithtown that board politics has played a role in his decision to leave.

 

Bill Motherway, who has been a trustee for the Kings Park Board of Education for six years, two of those years as president, said he is ready to move on.

Motherway that family and career obligations were considerations in his decision not to run for re-election.

“Six years is a long time,” said Motherway, who is an attorney and Executive Vice President of Tishman Realty and Construction in Manhattan. “My family and career require substantially more of my time and I owe it to my family to give them that time.”

In a recent interview with the Times of Smithtown, Motherway said that board politics also contributed to his decision.  As of late, the board has had to grapple with the decision to hire an outside attorney to investigate charges of misconduct against trustee Liz Barrett.

The last couple years, the tone of the board has become less collegial, certainly more political," he said. "People run for the school board because they want to further their political careers. I don't get it."

Motherway also recounts the successes the district has seen on what has often been referred to as a shoestring budget.  

“You have to appreciate the six years of the way the kids excelled," he said. "Some of the young scientists we have, the musicians, the athletes ... it's really the accomplishments. When you look at the money we spend compared to other districts, it's really a shoe-string budget to do the things we do."
