District Announces Online Lunch Program

A new convenient, easy and secure way to prepay and monitor your child's school meals.

This year's back to school send off can be a lot easier for parents of children in the  thanks to a new district wide online lunch system.

The district has signed on with MyNutrikids.com, which will allow parents to prepay their child’s lunch through an online account, which they fund. Parents can access account balances, review purchases and make payments all online. Parents can even sign up for a “low balance” email alert, at no charge.

A thirty-day history of a child’s menu choices can also be retrieved and printed out. Parents will have the ability to see the day, time and the item their child has purchased at breakfast or lunch.

“You don’t need to rely on your child because you can print it out.  It’s really very simple, everything is right at your fingertips,” said Diane Clareen, a clerical worker within the Kings Park School District who is in charge of the program.

A convenience fee of $1.75 is charged each time the account is funded with a credit or debit card. Parents with more than one child using the system who place money into multiple accounts are charged only one transaction fee each time they fund the account. The school district does not profit from the use of the website.

The district sent out a letter encouraging parents to use the system saying that it would help move lines more quickly and help alleviate cafeteria congestion.

All current payment methods, check or cash, will continue to be accepted for parents who choose to not participate in the online prepayment service.

“As a school district we try to stream line everything for the parents as well as the district,” she said. “It avoids a lot of headaches for the parents, having to remember to send your child to school with money.”
