UPDATED: As 5 p.m. Passes, Town Pushes Plow Deadline into the Night

After town supervisor tells News 12 that roads will be cleared by 5 p.m., officials amend their projections.

Update, 6:43 p.m. – Smithtown officials expect to have most roads in town cleared at Sunday evening, according to the town's website.

"The Town of Smithtown Highway Department is committed to clearing all Smithtown roads a soon as physically possible. We expect to have all main roads as well as residential streets passable later this evening," the posting read.

The update comes after Supervisor Patrick Vecchio earlier told News 12 that all roads would be plowed by 5 p.m.

Original Story – Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio told News 12 that all roads in the town will be plowed by 5 p.m., amid a growing chorus of boos over the time it has taken to get roads cleared.

Vecchio, reached by phone by News 12, said the historic snow levels, nearing 30 inches, has made it difficult, and caused many equipment problems due to the heavy volume of the snow.

"Biggest issue I think is that there was a 30-inch snowfall. A lot of snow has to be pushed. Men are working 14 hours a day, and I think they are doing the best they can under the circumstances," he said.

The supervisor, who said is town is renowned for snow removal, said workers are pulling 14-hour shifts, and guaranteed that all roads would be cleared by 5 p.m.

@Vick w: How long have you lived in this town? Nesconset (along with Hauppauge, Commack, St James, Kings Park) is unimportant. Smithtown proper, that dirty little stretch from the Bull to rt111 is all that matters. You can bet that was nicely plowed, early and often.

@ANN: The reason you were putting in 60 hours a week before you retired last year was probably to "pad" your pension (you know, the last two years "count" for your salary figure on your pension). And if not, you had a lousy job.
