Smithtown Town Board to Vote on New Garbage Contracts

Old furniture, mattresses would be picked up from the curbs more frequently under new contracts.

If you are tired of staring at your neighbor's old furniture sitting on the side of the road, so are town officials and they are springing into action.

Smithtown Town Board is expected to hold a special meeting this Thursday to vote on new garbage contracts that would include the regular curbside pick up of resident's old furniture and mattresses, Newsday reports.

Supervisor Patrick Vecchio said when the town put its garbage contracts out for bid, the town board specifically requested that the new contractors include the pick up of furniture and mattresses. It will be a change from the current system, where residents must call put these items out on the curb at the beginning of the week and call the parks department for pickup.

The public puts it out and it may not be picked up for a week,” Vecchio told Newsday. “It’s offensive to see mattresses waiting on the curb for pickup."

The town board will vote on whether to approve garbage collection contracts with four different companies totaling $127,000. If passed, the new contracts could save the town roughly $150,000, about half of what its spending now.

It's not immediately clear whether these new contracts will replace the town's existing garbage collection contracts, including those with Jody Enterprises whose two employees were being arrested for operating a recycling scheme in August 2012.
