Widow of Patrick Luca Petitioning for Patrick’s Law

For Stephanie Luca, widow of New York City police officer Patrick Luca who died in a kayaking accident in Smithtown Bay this past August, advocating for a stricter law regarding life jackets is one way she trying to move forward from her

Patrick's Law would  would require anyone on a watercraft smaller than 21 feet to wear life jackets at all times, according to a report in Newsday.

by Kings Park resident and boater Ted Sandomenico. Luca’s body was found the following day by a recreational boater near Sunken Meadow State Park.

According to a report in Newsday, Stephanie and officials from the town of Smithtown recently placed a sign at the spot where Caden and Luca launched the kayak, reminding boaters to that life jackets save lives.

“Had he had a life vest on, you would not be sitting here talking to me,” Stephanie said as she sat in her living room with her 2-year-old daughter, Brea, on her lap. “She would have a dad. I would have a husband.”
