Police On Fake Explosive: 'Better Safe Than Sorry'

A suspected explosive device found in the trunk of a vehicle at Commack Hand Car Wash Wednesday morning turned out to be a fake, Suffolk County Police Inspector James Rhoads said with relief Wednesday.

Police shut down Jericho Turnpike at Indian Head Road to investigate the suspicious package.

Upon finding a Rubbermade box with an item taped with with wires and flares and a note addressed to the "President of America" in the trunk of a vehicle that had been brought to the car wash, the business owner immediately called 911.

Upon investigation, the package turned out to be a fake training device.

"The owner of the place did the right thing. We'd rather them call us first and have it not be real than the other way around," Rhoads said.

Jericho Turnpike is now reopen.
