Kings Park Teen Killed in Crash

Nicholas Hein was driving a dirt bike when it collided with a car Friday night, police say.

A 17-year-old was killed in Kings Park Friday night when his dirt bike collided with a car on Cedar Street near East Northport Road, police said.

Suffolk County Fourth Squad Police said the victim, Nicholas Hein of Kings Park, was driving a dirt bike down Cedar Street when he collided with a 2009 Volkswagon driven by Daniel Byrne, 39, also of Kings Park.

Byrne told police he was traveling down East Northport Road when he made a left onto Cedar Street around 5 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by a Yamaha dirt bike.

Police said Hein's dirt bike was unregistered and did not have a headlight.

Hein was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he died from his injuries, police said. Byrne was not injured in the accident.

Police impounded both vehicles for safety checks.

Hein's wall on Facebook has received a flood of tributes and condolences since the accident, mostly from friends who knew him, but some from those he never met.

"You don't know me," said one post, "but you were too young and you had so much ahead of you. I'm so sorry, your family is in my prayers."

This is the fourth major motor vehicle accident involving a Kings Park resident and the second fatality in the past 30 days.

In early December,  when she was struck by a car while walking on St. Johnland Road. on Dec. 18 when he was struck by a car and was airlifted to Stony Brook Medical Center.

On Dec. 22, trying to cross West Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown.
