Charges Upgraded on Local Who Allegedly Killed Grandmother

Clarence Newcomb is now charged with second-degree murder after police say he killed his grandmother in early January.

Charges on a man who reportedly killed his grandmother just over a month ago have been upgraded from manslaighter to murder by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

Suffolk County Police said that on Jan. 4, Clarence Newcomb killed his grandmother – 82-year-old Kathleen Newcomb – following an argument over which TV show to watch.

Newcomb had been raised by his grandmother, who in her career at Kings Park State Hospital went from ward attendant to director of nursing.

Police originally charged Newcomb with first-degree manslaughter. He has remained held without bail by authorities since then, though second-degree murder charges were added in mid-January.

A DA spokesman declined to comment on the specifics of the case, as is department policy once a grand jury hands down an indictment.

Newcomb's lawyer, Paul Barahal, also declined to comment.
