Why Not Fireworks in Smithtown?

Many towns have displays, why not here?

We’ve asked around and we are pretty sure, but it’s been a long time, perhaps even never, that the Town of Smithtown has hosted a fireworks show.

With its proximity to the water, several town parks and quite a few beaches, seems like Smithtown has a few great venues for locals to gather and watch a spectacular show. We know budgets are tight, but what do you think?

We’d like to know, has there ever been a town display of fireworks? Would you like to see one? Let us know in our comment section.

In the meantime, check out our

The bluff was a fun place for fireworks, but like everything else a few had to ruin it for everyone else.

In 97 the SJFD held their 75th anniversary at flower field and there were fireworks, but that's all I ever remember. Minus the ones residents set off.

You can't get sidewalks installed or roads or curbs repaired, but you think they're going to ante up for a fireworks display? You forget who runs Smithtown (hint: he's that old guy from The Simpsons). NO FIREWORKS FOR YOU!

Agree, Baron shops and waiting on a sidewalk repair for Ten years needs to be addressed than a Fireworks display. Plenty of options to see them somewhere else. Let's fix the foundation first before we add a coat of paint.

Funny how the rules seem to work hardest against the actual homeowners/taxpayers and not the businesses trying to louse up the area.

I too remember going to the field at the now Hauppauge Middle School to see the fireworks show, it was wonderful!

There was a display just north of the Smithhaven Mall. You sat in the parking lot at the mall and the fireworks were just north in an empty field. They built a Sports Authority and Staples in on building and added a Borders in that field. "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot!"

I remember them at Hauppauge HS too. Think of them every year as now I live right down the road . None here in Smithtown that I can recall ever.

4th of Julys at Hauppauge Highe School grounds were fond memories of my teen years. Then at the mall shooting over the Borders, Sports Authority lot and when my kids were little going to Lake Ronkonkoma and listening to WALK synchronize in the car! What happened to the fun we used to have? Not to mention I want a grocery store back on Main Street!! We used to have Blue Jays, A&P and Bohack all within a few blocks of each other and now bo diddley!

Kings Park Fire Department used to host fire works displays on Bread & Cheese Hollow Rd, during the late 50's early 60's. Absolutely beautiful!!

As recent as last year, Hauppauge High School had fireworks during Homecoming, but I would have loved to have seen them there for Fourth of July.

KP Pride for Life July 04, 2012 at 01:52 AM
Ever wonder who pays for the fireworks display at Hauppauge HS for homecomming? I hope it is not you, the tax payer? Anyone know the answere?
Barrrs1 July 04, 2012 at 04:00 AM
I want one...
new guy July 06, 2012 at 03:45 PM
what does that have to do with fireworks? why should the town pay for fireworks? i'm sure some residents woulod'nt want their tax money being spent on fireworks.
new guy July 06, 2012 at 03:46 PM
town codes are there for a reason. another useless post.
new guy July 06, 2012 at 03:51 PM
i agree...too many comercial propertys have gone vacant and/or are in horrible shape. if the landlords spent some money they might attract some quality buissness's. perfect example, look at that eyesore next to russ savatt park on main street. that would be a perfect location for a "side entrance" store. taking full advantage of the brick patio.
new guy July 06, 2012 at 03:52 PM
i remeber that also. i didnt know the fire dept. did that. i remeber it taking place in the late 70's-early 80's though. is that field still there or is it developed?
Bob fisher July 06, 2012 at 06:54 PM
lLast fire workers I saw . On Long Island was at Coney Island in the 1950s. Would love to see adisplay in Smith town Bay visible to the whole town.
littleShamrock July 07, 2012 at 01:09 AM
As long as i would be done safely and NOT raise my taxes anymore, I agree to a display. It makes me a nervous wreck with these back yard shows run by people who think they know what they are doing. Besides, (not to be an old croanie) if they are illegal then the people selling them in other states should know they aren't allowed here and take responsibility by being fined for those sales ... Like cigarettes and Beer, lets take action!

I was told that the fireworks display that was held in Flowerfield years ago could not continue because in order to host a display there had to be a firemen in the department that had certification and specialized training in pyrotechnics and the person certified in our area was lost in 9/11.

Every year I drive all the way to Massapequa to see their firework show. It Is a very big community event. Residents (and non residents) get together in a park, sitting on blankets or chairs while enjoying a night out with family and friends ,listening to a band up until the amazing firework display. They also have some food venders there. I wish Smithtown would do something similar.
