Sunken Meadow Improvements Underway

Officials seeking input for use of parking field two.

Plans for future and ongoing renovations at including a reconstruction of the golf course clubhouse and an environmental education room at the main building were laid out a recent Kings Park Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Brian Foley, Deputy Director for the New York State Region of State Parks, said a large infusion of funds is helping to spur along the renovations “after years where it has been lacking.”

“Great renovations will be made at the facility,” said Foley.  “Real, tangible improvements are being made to the golf course, which will be carried through and completed within the next year. The clubhouse is going under a significant renovation and reconstruction and once that is completed, you will see a world of difference.”

An environmental education room is slated to be constructed in the interior part of the courtyard by the main building, which Foley said, “has the potential for community use.”

“The master plan is not forgetting the local use; improving bike paths or boardwalk areas that are principally used by locals,” said Foley.

The planning process is also underway for a stream restoration project that will try to restore the flow of water in areas that have been dammed or obstructed, according to Foley.

Additionally, Foley is seeking creative suggestions for the field two parking area, which is generally unused throughout the year.

“Outside of eight to nine weeks in the summer, it is a totally unused or under utilized area of the park,” said Foley. “One of the things we want to take a look at in that area to see if there is a creative way, in a park-like setting that this area can be used for things that aren’t related to the parking of cars.”

Officials are considering a low maintenance grass for the area so that it can still be used for parking, but also for picnicking.

Another public hearing, is expected before the master plan is finalized.

“Many of these things have been long in the making and we are finally seeing some action being taken on it,” said Foley.

I like that idea, they could put together a summer concert series for small bands, like they do at local libraries. It was once a beautiful place to spend the day, and now I rarely go. I would love to see it built up , we need something like that on the north shore.

In a perfect world, I would love to see a recreation area for kids/teens (like at Jones Beach), i.e., Long Island-themed mini golf, paddle tennis, roller hockey rink, paddle tennis, etc., that could be open on summer eves as well. Teens desperately need a place to hang out. But, we're not in a perfect world. Too bad!

I love the park just the way it is. It could use some modernization but I like the 'undeveloped' feel to it. No better feeling than driving a few minutes to the park and feeling like you went somewhere and got off of long island.
