Local Troop's Continuing Compassion Nets $600 for Sandy Victims

Kings Park Brownie Troop 2793 works with Bead for Life to help raise needed funds.

Kings Park brownie troop 2793 continued their community connection and presented  a $600 check to the Family Service League on Sunday to help families affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The troop has been learning about poverty around the world and how they can help through Bead for Life, where the troop not only learns about the impoverished, but works to change it by selling paper bead jewelry made by Ugandan women.

Around the time of the Bead Party, Hurricane Sandy plagued much of Long Island and the Tri-State area.  The girls felt a sense of compassion towards neighbors that were suffering.  They decided to donate the proceeds they raised to those affected by this disaster.

"Over the last three years The Kings Park Farmers Market in conjunction with The Kings Park Civic Association has played a large role in supporting the needs of the community," said civic member Aly Elish-Swartz.  "The market enables fundraisers and continues to donate fresh produce to the local food pantry in Kings Park."
