Week in Review: State Ed Commissioner Visits Kings Park High School, RCCA Patients Being Moved to Pilgrim Psych Hosptial

The students of Kings Park High School had an opportunity to speak with top education officials and local politicians in a meeting held at the high school Thursday morning.

State Education Commissiner, John B. King Jr., paid a visit to the school along with state Sen. John Flanagan, Assemb. Michael Fitzpatrick and Board of Regents member Roger Tilles.

Residential Care Center on Psych Center Property Being Phased Out

The residential care center housed on the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center grounds will be phased out by Nov. 2, with remaining patients being sent to Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in Brentwood. According to a spokesman with the New York State Office of Mental Health, 75 patients still remain at RCCA, a residential services program that provides support to those who find it difficult to live in a more independent setting, and will be transferred to a 325-bed unit program at Pilgrim.

The generosity of the Sean Weisse Foundation can be seen in the classrooms of Kings Park, thorugh smart boards, supplies and even tutoring.

Although Sean’s beautiful life only graced this earth shortly, he lives on the hearts of so many. His parents were staunch advocates for his special needs and now they go to bat for other children like Sean.

Meet the Owner: High School Internship Helps Local Find His Groove

What started out as an interning gig on a local radio station has turned into a life long passion and a thriving business for a local who said he still loves doing what he does. Kevin Barattini was a 16-year-old kid, playing music on Kings Park High School’s radio station, 88.5, WTEC, when he landed an internship with WBLI. Instead of going to school three days out of the week, he did the morning show with Steve and Maria. “That’s where it all started,” said Barattini.

Event Spotlight: Sweet Charity for St. Patrick's Day Parade

We are half-way to St. Patrick's Day and the Kings Park St. Patrick's Day planning committe is thinking green. The committee will be hosting a fundraising event at Engeman Theater for with a cocktail and hors d'oeurves reception before a showing of Sweet Charity.
