Republican Leaders Back Creighton for Smithtown Supervisor

County Republicans have turned their backs on 12-term Supervisor Patrick Vecchio, announcing on Monday that they will endorse Councilman Robert Creighton to unseat the man who has helmed Smithtown since 1978.

Creighton, a Republican who was re-elected to his seat on the town council in 2011, formally announced Monday night that he will face off against Vecchio in a primary on Sept. 10.

The back-and-forth among Republican party leaders continued on Wednesday, as County GOP Chairman John Jay LaValle responded to a letter by Town Supervisor Patrick Vecchio defending his own record over the years – as well as a shot to those who decided to support his opponent in this fall's race for the town's supervisor seat, Councilman Robert Creighton.

Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio wrote a scathing letter calling Suffolk GOP Leader John Jay LaValle's leadership "pathetic" after he endorsed opponent Robert Creighton for Smithtown Supervisor on Monday night.
