Week in Review: Local Firefighters Respond to Manorville Brush Fire

A look back at the week's biggest headlines.

Kings Park fire chief Mark O'Brien on Tuesday described what his fire crews saw upon : "It was a wall of smoke."

"It was just a wall of smoke," he said. "That’s what the guys were encountering as they went in there. The guys saw plenty of fire, a wall of smoke."

Smithtown Park officials aren't worried about the possibility of local brush fires breaking out. The ingredients just aren't there, they say. 

Charles Barrett, Town of Smithtown's Parks director, said he has "no real concern" of a large, mass scale brush fire starting up in one of the town parks. Despite the dry winter, there shouldn't be a spark to light the flames.

Winers were selected in the Nissequogue River State Park Foundation's 1st Annual Community Quilt contest, held last month during a reception at the park administration building as it opened a month-long display.

L. John Friia, president of the Suffolk Classical Society, presented a letter on Tuesday, April 3rd, to the Kings Park Board of Education and the LOTE Department in an effort to have them reconsider their recent decision to drop Latin from the curriculum despite a current enrollment of 26 for the 2012-2013 year.

Patch has a new teammate: Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira.

Teixeira, a two-time All-Star, has been appointed Commissioner of Patch Baseball. The first baseman will interact with Patch users by regularly responding to questions, sharing baseball tips and posting exclusive videos.
