Update: Town is Prepared for Expected Snow

Moderate snow, light winds expected.

Snow will begin tomorrow by about 8am in our region. Winds are expected to be relatively light with light snow continuing into the afternoon and evening hours. There is a possibility for heavier snow to develop bringing the totals to about 6 inches. Local weather blogger Matt Hammer says don’t panic just yet.

“Weather models have been showing a weaker scenario than what was previously thought earlier in the week,” said Hammer.

In any case, the Town of Smithtown's Superintendent of Highways, Glenn Jorgensen says they are ready for the storm.

Jorgensen joked, “Six inches doesn’t scare me after the last storm,” he said.

The highway department has already been checking lights and hydraulics  on the trucks and putting spreaders on.

Trucks will be on the road as soon as the storm starts. “We have a night crew now so coverage is 24-hours a day,” said Jorgensen.

Local stores say they are prepared and have restocked after the last storm. Commack Hardware said they have plenty of salt and shovels.

“We sold out of just about everything we had last time, all of our shovels,” said salesperson Chris Handy.

Once this snowfall passes, says Hammer, all eyes focus on the middle of next week. "That's our next shot at any snowfall," he said.
