Lauren Lenardi,16, Succumbs to Cancer

Kings Park High School student and soccer player was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2010.

Beloved Kings Park High School student and soccer player, Lauren Lenardi, passed away on Friday. Lenardi was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer in December of 2010.

The school and community rallied around the 16-year-old student, holding fundraisers dubbed "Laurenstrong" and "Love for Lauren". Last year the Kings Park High School girls soccer team celebrated Lauren's Sweet 16 birthday on the field with Lauren in a game against West Babylon.

"Lauren is an amazing person with tremendous spirit, optimism, courage, strength and wisdom beyond her years," said girls varsity soccer coach, Bridget Keenan in an email to Patch last year.

"We are blessed to know Lauren and all that she stands for. I hope that at least one time in our lives that each of us can find the inner strength that Lauren finds each day."

It is with great sadness that Patch reports this news. We extend our condolences, love and support to all who knew and loved Lauren.

Please share your memories and thoughts about Lauren in the comments section below.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. I hope you find comfort in knowing that Lauren touched many lives, from people who knew her and whom have never even met her.

My heart is so heavy and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I didn't know Lauren or her family but she must have been amazing as the community rallied around her. God Bless!

A new job has me driving by the KP High School every weekday. I saw the #40 and Lauren (something, I couldn't figure out the rest) on the fence of the athletic field and came to the internet to find out what it was all about...It sadden me to read that this was a tribute to a very much loved young woman who left this world waaaay too early...BUT, I read her story of courage & just had to let those who were privileged to have known such a brave girl that there is woman out there, who rides by everyday and will now say a little pray for Lauren and derive inspiration from her..."strength, inspiration and never give up attitude" everyday...
