Psych Center Demo Moved Out to July

Move will not change completion date.

Demolition that was scheduled to begin in May at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Hospital is now scheduled to start in July.

According to Regional Parks Director Ron Foley, the company designated to complete the demo, will be ready to start in July.

“Part of the thinking was that this was when school will be out and also, this works for the contractor’s own schedule,” said Foley.

The work, which was originally scheduled to begin mid-May, will be done by National Salvage and Service Corp., which was  awarded a $6.4 million contract  for the

According to Foley, the project is expected to meet its original completion date of Nov. 2013.

So what is the site going to be used for once the buildings are demolished?
new guy April 17, 2012 at 01:25 AM
Is there a list of buildings slated to come down?

Good question, my bet is it will be the smallest buildings for the most money. I know one that is slated to be torn down is the firehouse. And its not like its in the worst shape. I would also like to see a list, well what about it?

It's a park and the cleanup is under the jurisdiction of the NY State Parks Recreation and Historic preservation.

Lisa, who????? & why?????

Wouldn't it be better to make the firehouse a museum of some kind maybe commemorating the history of the hospital. I worked at KPSH/KPPC - Bldg. 21 - back in the early 70's - I am sad to see so much history destroyed. Lots of lifetime friends and memories were made there!

My first couple years working there in early 60's I lived upstairs in the firehouse. If they get rid of it, I want to be there and have tears in my eyes. Many memories from those days. Home U (School of Nursing Dome)was just across the tennis court and we always had a date. We had to get passed Mrs Connik (House-Mother) with the six pack, and the girls upstairs had a bucket and rope, so we would put the beer in and they would haul it up. Many memories, all good. I am glad to be part of KPPC for 35years

thoughtless plan since 1992...........saga continues
new guy April 17, 2012 at 02:01 PM
I agree Lisa. Seems like nothing will ever get done in there.
Jason Medina April 17, 2012 at 02:28 PM
Don't worry, Gil. The firehouse and storehouse are safe for now. They are not on the list of buildings to go... yet.
Jason Medina April 17, 2012 at 02:34 PM
Yes, there are 14 structures scheduled to be demolished. Not all are buildings. They are removing the smokestack from the power plant, the fuel tanks nearby, the remains of the railroad trestle, some old unused hospital roads, the farm buildings, boathouse, barge, recreation center, Cafe 56, most of Group 2 (122 & 123), the beat up old repair shop (Building 57), & the steam pipe junction house (thus, destroying some tunnels in the process).
Jason Medina April 17, 2012 at 02:34 PM
They are not demolishing all of the buildings, so the site will remain pretty much the same. Only emptier.
Jason Medina April 17, 2012 at 02:40 PM
I almost forgot Buildings 35, 36, and the salt shed.

A PDF has been added to the photo section of this article, which lists the buildings that are slated to come down. More information regarding the demo can be found on an earlier Patch story- http://patch.com/A-nCzc

What was intended in 1992 no longer exists since the property went from the Empire developement Corporation to the Parks. The saga does gontinue in the right direction.
KP LIslander April 19, 2012 at 04:43 PM
Ummm...Why does school have to be out in order for this work to be done? Does the KP school district buses utilize the Main Blvd of the Psych Center as part of their routes? If not that, then I can't understand what work being done to building son the former KPPC property has to do with operations of the school district.
