Evening Storm Expected to Bring Significant Snowfall

Heaviest snow expected overnight, tapering off for the morning commute.

The National Weather Service  has stated that Wednesday evening's winter storm will bring significant snowfall to our area and has issued a winter storm warning for Suffolk County and other parts of Long Island starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday that will last until 6 a.m. Thursday.

Snow has fallen throughout much of this afternoon, and forecasters warn that a mixture of heavy snow and sleet will produce hazardous driving conditions for the Wednesday evening commute.

Wednesday afternoon's storm will be followed by a second storm in the evening  that will bring with it more snow and accumulations expected to reach as much as 8 inches with much of the heaviest snowfall occurring overnight.

Local weather blogger Matt Hammer say some areas may even experience thundersnow.

"Near-blizzard conditions will be likely and I wouldn't be surprised to hear reports of thundersnow, or thunder and lightning during heavy snow bands, overnight tonight during the most potent part of this storm," said Hammer.
