Who's Headed to Aldi's Grand Opening?

New discount grocery store opens in Lake Grove Thursday.

On Thursday, the Smithtown-Lake Grove area got a new grocery store with the opening of the in Lake Grove.

Patch will head down there in the afternoon to see what the turnout is like. Are you planning on checking out the market as well? The store is set to open at 9 a.m. with a ribbon cutting event.

Aldi is owned by the same corporate parent that owns Trader Joe's, Albrecht Discount, which also operates a market in the area. Initially a European brand, Aldi has branched out in the United States, with 1,200 stores in 32 states.

"As evidenced by our first store opening in Bay Shore, consumers are really looking for ways to stretch their food dollars, and we have been happy to provide the solution," Bruce Persohn, South Windsor division vice president for Aldi, said in a statement.

Shoppers won't find traditional brands in Aldi, though. The market only sells brands that it owns, which it says is why the food comes at such a discount. The store also features a few practices tied to its European roots, such as not accepting credit cards, not offering any bags and asking shoppers to pay a deposit for shopping carts.

Aldi said it employed many green or energy-saving materials in the construction of the Lake Grove store including energy-efficient light bulbs and recycled building materials.

Aldi plans to open a store in Lindenhurst in early 2013.

I only shop at Aldi's. The cart's have short chain's that require a quarter be inserted to release them.Quarter is ejected when cart is returned and chain is re-attached. My savings at Aldi's are in the 50-60% range ,products are excellent quality .They accept cash or debit cards.

Bj's in Islandia use to have those 25 cent deposit carts. They only lasted about a year before the chain and quarter slot was removed.

No brand names? Purchase only Aldi's brands whether you like them or not! You have to pay for shopping bags or bring your own! After paying for groceries you have to move to bagging area to bag your groceries! You need to pay for a shopping cart and then return the cart to the store to redeem your 25 cents! Cannot use cost saving MFG's coupons!! What comes next? A non-refundable admission fee just to enter the store to browse or shop! You have to be kidding!!! Why would anyone want to shop at Aldi's? I am sticking to ShopRite...Best prices, Best sales, Shelves always fully stocked (Not like Waldbaums) I cannot see see this store surviving in this community? Time will tell!!

Would you bring your own bags and bag your own groceries if you could save 20-40% on your groceries? I would. When I had a lot of kids living at home I did a lot of shopping at Costco and bought their Kirkland products in bulk.(I had to bag my own stuff there too.) Now it's just me and the wife. I found Aldi's Kirkwood products in much smaller packages work just fine for us. The quality of their house brands so far has been just fine. The 25 cent cart deposit doesn't bother me either. It will prevent a lot of supermarket dings on my car from inconsiderate people who leave their carts wherever they please. Most of the complaints people have about Aldi's are pluses for me. I'll still go to Shoprite, Meat Farms,Costco and even Whole Foods but whenever I can save a few bucks at Aldi, I will.

Aldi rocks ! I used to shop with them back in my jersey days, and they are now back on my radar with this store. The quality is great and you can't beat their prices, and no coupons or stupid loyalty cards to worry about. Aldi is NOT a store for those who need to be pamered, and that is a huge plus for me as a shopper.
