PHOTOS: Aldi's Open, And It's Hiring

As locals flock to new discount grocery store, manager tells Patch they're still looking for staff.

Area shoppers came out in droves Thursday to check out the region's newest grocery store, Aldi in Lake Grove.

A district manager said the place had ben packed since its 9 a.m. ribbon cutting. Though the store is still a little thin on cashiers, he said, adding that they will hold a job fair on April 10 at the store for applicants to come in and interview. Jobs start at $12.10 an hour.

A few shoppers who asked not to be identified said they liked the new market, but Melony Reif of Smithtown said it comes down to how well you know your groceries.

"I think it's good if you know your prices," said Reif, who often does her grocery shopping at Shop Rite.

"Canteloupe for $1.29? That's a good price."

This is true Joel. We did have the Waldbaums but has since become CVS. That's ok, but I'm sure the "powers that be" could explore and find a venue to attract a store. We have that incomplete building across from the ice rink, we have several closed vacant store that could perhaps be combined into a larger one. If a true diligent effort was made I don't doubt it could be done. Heck, find a taker & build a new store :) I LOVE the Fairway idea! :)

Joe, we could also get rid of Key Food & put a clean, decent, community minded store in the location :)

The "quarter for a cart" idea was tried by Price Club in the 1980's. It didn't last long. I'm curious to see if it works this time.

Cat lady I would like to see a Trader Joes or an IGA. Key Food is dirty, espesially the bottle return. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Agree. I shop at Stop and Shop now nice Waldbaums closed. It is just too big when you want to get a couple of items. I have tried a couple of times to shop at Key Food but it is just to expensive and needs a complete overhaul. I feel for people who do not have transportation and have to shop at Key Food. Key Food could be a gold mind if they just cleaned up their act and it would help the others stores in that shopping center.
