Hair Heaven at Newly Opened Blowout 22

Entering Blowout 22, which opened Tuesday at 116 Main St. in Kings Park, is like walking into a little piece of hair heaven.

The chic, modern salon is a local version of Manhattan’s popular dry bars, in which customers come in for a wash and styled blowout, except that at $25, Blowout 22 is much more affordable than the city’s salons, which charge about $40.

“A lot of the salon’s concept has to do with me stumbling upon it in Manhattan,” owner Debbie Lavecchia, said.

A mother of three girls, Lavecchia said that she felt bringing something like the dry bar to Long Island, would be something local women could benefit from.

“I really do believe in this. Just being a woman myself, I feel like having your hair done at an affordable price is something people will embrace,” she said.

On a visit to the salon Tuesday morning, this writer put herself in the hairdresser’s seat for an hour of pampering.

Upon arrival, customers are greeted by the salon’s friendly stylists and offered a beverage. Then using photos on an iPad, the stylist goes over the four types of blowouts offered by the salon: the classic blowout, sleek and straight, big loose curls and beachy waves. This writer went for the beachy waves look, which is done by using a blow dryer to complete a classic blowout, and finished with a curling iron to add soft waves.

After the hair wash, customers are treated to a gentle head massage and then, brought over to the salon chair where the magic begins. Stylist Alexandra O’Malley turned this writer’s curly, un-styled hair into a beachy, bouncy look – minus the sand and salt water.

The salon, which took over the space previously rented by Victoria’s Hair Secrets, has sleek, clean decor with white walls and chandelier lighting. Blow dryers hang from the ceiling, which is an aesthetically pleasing touch, but also benefits the stylists, by making the hair dryers lighter and therefore, less likely to cause carpal tunnel.

O’Malley said the hanging dryers are much more comfortable to use, especially when her wrists are doing most of the heavy lifting.

The salon is open Tuesdays through Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

To make an appointment, call 631-663-5522. The salon will soon have a website as well where customers can book appointments at www.blowout22.com.
