5 Businesses That Opened Shop in 2011

In spite of the economy, several new businesses braved the storm in 2011.

While the rough economy , there were more than a handful that opened their doors in 2011. Here's our list.

1. got off the ground in May, bringing fresh local produce to residents through the summer and fall.

2. in Northport was opened by Kings Park resident Marc Soojian, a return to a generations-old family business originally started in 1929 in Oakland, Calif.

3. Mrs. Brown's Kitchen in early September, changing the name and menu but hanging on to the family dining experience which the former establishment's owner had intended for the neighborhood.

4. replaced a former Blockbuster video store, bringing a local touch back to Kings Park at the hands of the property's landlord, Tony Tanzi.

5. August welcomed the opening of , a coffee shop/café chain offering a menu with some healthier options than many of its competitors, located next to the Smithtown train station.
