Bow Wow Treasures Packs Up Shop

After five years, owner said not enough local traffic coming in to store.

As one shop owner says it is time to move on.

Bow Wow Treasures, a thrift shop dedicated to raising money to open a local animal shelter said that the Kings Park location is just not working and is in the process of looking to rent in nearby towns where he said the majority of the store’s donations and customers come from.

“Our best donations come from surrounding towns like Northport, St. James and Fort Salonga,” said owner Peter Brecka. “Less than 14 percent of our business comes from Kings Park.”

Brecka, said the lack of business has stalled the main purpose of the store; to open a no-kill animal shelter.

“We have terrific stuff, much of it high end and new,” he said. Brecka also cited what he sees as a rundown downtown area as a contributing factor in his decision to leave and said he hopes that will change, but added “who can afford to wait?”

The store will close its location by Feb. 15. Brecka said customers can continue to come into the store until then. Signs will be hung in the window announcing the new location when it is found.

“It’s time,” said Brecka. “I think we will do better somewhere else.”

I didn't refer to the stores as ghetto because they are not owned by townies. Has anyone been in these stores ? please go in the stores and then tell me what you think. I think one of them is run by someone from kings park. I don't care what town people come from if they are willing to fix up the stores.
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 02:26 PM
Yeah, kings park is a true ghetto. A slum
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 02:29 PM
I drive through with my eyes closed because its such a ghetto, people being killed and robbed right next to you as you drive through. I lock my doors just before I drive through main st. Such a disgusting slum
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 02:33 PM
Too many poor ghetto people in kp to open up nice restaurants. The people would just rob the nice restaurants and loot the town.
Lauren De Gray Kastrinos January 19, 2013 at 03:36 PM
Kings Park is NOT ghetto but main street looks disgusting and i hope something happens soon to help our town. Stupid sarcastic comments dont do anything your clearly missing the point of this conversation and I still have not heard one person tell me that they have infact gone into these 2 new clothes stores. There are some people on this thread that get it and some people that just dont at all.

Main St is a dump? Well here's what you can do to change it: 1. Join the KPCA and contribute time and $ kingsparkcivic.com 2. Join the KP Chamber of Commerce- attend their meetings and make your voice heard to the landlords and business owners Here's the big one: ACTUALLY PATRONIZE THE STORES OF KP- yes, that's right, if you vote by directing your feet and money into stores and restaurants that are here in KP, you will a. provide them with the funding needed to maintain and upgrade their businesses and b. encourage more "upscale" businesses to come to KP. Or you know, you could just sit and complain and insult a community because you don't have two brain cells to rub together to do any of the above. I'm suspecting from the quality of the complaints I've seen on this thread that the lack of brain cells theory may hold water, but you never know...

I think Yurmama should go back to it's ghetto where it came from!! Lock your doors! What would someone steal from you? wait maybe they will steal your mama!!! haha!
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 04:45 PM
You should take that material on the road. I agree with Liz and kpres what a damn ghetto this town is. It's a disgusting, unattractive slum

PLEASE DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. If you ignore them, they will get bored & dissipate, just like any other fart...
LAURA January 19, 2013 at 07:51 PM
I had no idea that the thrift shop's proceeds were going towards putting up a no kill shelter... I think advertising would have helped. A sign like that surely would have animal lovers like me stop in.
LAURA January 19, 2013 at 07:53 PM
I also want to add that if the thrift shop doesn't sell cheaper priced items, it probably shouldn't have been called a thrift shop. I agree with whoever that was that mentioned that.
LAURA January 19, 2013 at 08:02 PM
And whoever is saying those crazy things about KP must be an immature kid trying to rile up the crowd. The username fits the trash coming out in their comments.
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 08:39 PM
Article says that people from st James and north port (2 neighboring towns) knew about it and shopped there. How much more could they do to promote it, open up your eyes. You cheap losers in kp never shopped there so now they're moving to st James or north port. Try supporting your local businesses and maybe they won't leave. The business was for charity too and nevertheless you stuck up kpers never supported them. That's why the town looks like shit. You all like to complain on your keyboards and do nothing about it in reality. Yeah I agree bring main st back to what it was in the '50's when it held the record for most bars in a single town. Bunch of alkies
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 08:39 PM
Don't post if you have nothing bad to say!
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 08:43 PM
My name is my name, it's I talian I can't do anything about it so stop being immature and making fun of my name you big bully
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 08:44 PM
Still lingering.....
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 08:52 PM
How cheap do they want them to sell at? The proceeds are donated to animals, you're too cheap to make a donation and get a thrift in return? That's exactly why they are moving.
Yurmama January 19, 2013 at 08:55 PM
FYI- just in case you ever decide to roam outside of kp one day, the traffic is bad during rush hour everywhere on LI.

He's obiously a child, Laura. Ignore him. He'll go away...

A child of parents from your generation. I might even be your kid....
Pam DeFord January 20, 2013 at 03:52 PM
Well said kptree!!! Thank you!
Pam DeFord January 20, 2013 at 03:55 PM
@Yurmama... If you think KP is that bad then do what kptree stated above or just find another town to live in if you are that unhappy. Is anyone focusing you to stay??
Pam DeFord January 20, 2013 at 03:59 PM
I agree with you Laura!
Lauren De Gray Kastrinos January 20, 2013 at 06:49 PM
KP tree is right I'm going to check out those groups and see if I can go to the next meeting. I don't have lots of time I hope some day soon I can help out in some way instead of just complaining. I do go to the stores in Kings Park love the bagel place , kings park nails , ciros Ralph's in the summer . Still have not heard one person say they have shopped at those 2 new stores
Joseph M Tavernite January 21, 2013 at 11:03 PM
Most of the stores I go to are in KP, ie ( food , dry cleaning , hair cut, bank etc. , but I do agree that main st lookes run down and the too new stores that everyone in talking about does not help. The town and the people in town needs to help the local business
Brijnet23 January 31, 2013 at 01:15 PM
Sad to see such a well meaning establishment pack up and leave. A question for everyone commenting though... How would you feel about a Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurant opening on Main St. ? I'm talking about a very casual, mostly take out type of place with good, homemade, quality, authentic food. Any thoughts ?
Sharon Nustad January 31, 2013 at 01:57 PM
Like Salsa Salsa?
Lauren De Gray Kastrinos January 31, 2013 at 02:12 PM
We already have the burrito place

Tex Mex = Sombrero's on Meadow..
King Spark February 01, 2013 at 03:57 AM
It all comes down to money and there isn't a hell of a lot of it lately, unfortunately. Tanzi plaza is way too congested looking..The hardware store was a nice addition, the esthetics of the outside are quite appealing as well.. Shortstop is a dump, Main St. Pizza sucks and Martino's is just plain dirty and way over priced! Even Andersen's has gone down the tube.. Their quality of food is not the same as it used to be, I def don't frequent them as much any longer. Dixies is ok, just the location completely makes them a sight unseen. I would get rid of Sombrero's and move Dixies into that location, Sombrero's food is def. lacking! As much as I'd like to see business thrive in our town, there are way too many pizza joints and nail places and barber shops!! 3 in a 1 mile radius, that's crazy!! I like the idea of a holistic shop, maybe a record store, like Mr. Cheapo's used records and such, some old style record players that type of stuff.. How about a store dedicated to boating supplies? Maybe a mystical shop, even? So many ideas just not enough money or time to put into civic association meetings and such.. I'm too busy working 40++ hours a week just to pay my own bills. :(
