Bow Wow Treasures Packs Up Shop

After five years, owner said not enough local traffic coming in to store.

As one shop owner says it is time to move on.

Bow Wow Treasures, a thrift shop dedicated to raising money to open a local animal shelter said that the Kings Park location is just not working and is in the process of looking to rent in nearby towns where he said the majority of the store’s donations and customers come from.

“Our best donations come from surrounding towns like Northport, St. James and Fort Salonga,” said owner Peter Brecka. “Less than 14 percent of our business comes from Kings Park.”

Brecka, said the lack of business has stalled the main purpose of the store; to open a no-kill animal shelter.

“We have terrific stuff, much of it high end and new,” he said. Brecka also cited what he sees as a rundown downtown area as a contributing factor in his decision to leave and said he hopes that will change, but added “who can afford to wait?”

The store will close its location by Feb. 15. Brecka said customers can continue to come into the store until then. Signs will be hung in the window announcing the new location when it is found.

“It’s time,” said Brecka. “I think we will do better somewhere else.”

Sad to see such a well meaning establishment pack up and leave. A question for everyone commenting though... How would you feel about a Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurant opening on Main St. ? I'm talking about a very casual, mostly take out type of place with good, homemade, quality, authentic food. Any thoughts ?

It all comes down to money and there isn't a hell of a lot of it lately, unfortunately. Tanzi plaza is way too congested looking..The hardware store was a nice addition, the esthetics of the outside are quite appealing as well.. Shortstop is a dump, Main St. Pizza sucks and Martino's is just plain dirty and way over priced! Even Andersen's has gone down the tube.. Their quality of food is not the same as it used to be, I def don't frequent them as much any longer. Dixies is ok, just the location completely makes them a sight unseen. I would get rid of Sombrero's and move Dixies into that location, Sombrero's food is def. lacking! As much as I'd like to see business thrive in our town, there are way too many pizza joints and nail places and barber shops!! 3 in a 1 mile radius, that's crazy!! I like the idea of a holistic shop, maybe a record store, like Mr. Cheapo's used records and such, some old style record players that type of stuff.. How about a store dedicated to boating supplies? Maybe a mystical shop, even? So many ideas just not enough money or time to put into civic association meetings and such.. I'm too busy working 40++ hours a week just to pay my own bills. :(
