Overview: Dixie’s is the brainchild of attorney Ken Savin, who grew up in the restaurant/catering business, Mike Franchi, a deli owner for 30 years, and Danny Passafaro, who builds restaurants, delis and bars. Each brings his unique expertise to Dixie’s Smokehouse which opened two years ago. It’s Texas barbecue and rotisserie at its best at prices that can’t be beat. The secret to luscious meat so tender that it falls off the bone is true pit smoking. Hickory wood is burned as a source of indirect heat, with the meat being smoked at low temperatures for hours. The restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week, does a brisk take-out and catering business, and specializes in picnics-to-go.
Decor: This is family-friendly, laidback dining at its best. There’s abundant brickwork in keeping with the pleasing color scheme reminiscent of the hues of a flame. Accoutrements pay tribute to the Lone Star State, and humorous, tongue-in-cheek images of pigs will bring a smile to your face.There’s also patio dining.
The Drinks: The full bar boasts four beers on tap, including Stella and Six Point, as well as 20 others. Wine is $6 to $9 by the glass.
Appetizers: Stand-out starters include buffalo tenders (spicy chicken tenders with bleu cheese, $6.49), Cowboy Mike’s famous chicken wings ($8.99 a dozen, $4.99 a half dozen), and Over-the-Top Nachos ($8.99), served with a taste-tempting mélange of melted cheddar and Jack cheeses, black beans, and jalapenos.
Salads: At $10.95 each, Texas-size salads are a meal in themselves. The Coconut Shrimp and Mango Salad showcases a tantalizing medley of shrimp, mango aloi, honey-roasted peanuts, mandarin oranges, and strawberries over field greens finished with a sesame ginger dressing.
Entrees: Variety is the name of the game at Dixie, offering up endless possibilities for diners. Dixie’s is known for its freshly roasted rotisserie chicken, which can be ordered by the quarter ($7.99), half ($9.99) or whole ($14.99). Among the many stellar, supremely satisfying entrees are Smokehouse Combos, served with cornbread and your choice of two sides. We enjoyed the three meat combo with baby back ribs, St. Louis ribs and pulled pork for $26.99, but you can mix it up with grilled chicken, rotisserie chicken, fish or shrimp.
Sides: Crispy sweet potato fries, waffle fries, garlic mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese can be ordered à la carte for $2.99, but many entrees come with one or more sides.
Desserts: Turtle cheesecake, chocolate decadence cake, and red velvet cake are among the desserts that can be had for $4.50.
Service: The staff is pleasant and efficient, and you’ll most likely see one of the owners mingling with the diners.
Signature Dish: Ribs, ribs, and more ribs- baby back, St. Louis, and mega beef ribs, which have been smoked for six hours and seasoned to perfection. One of the many ways that you can partake of their succulence is in Dixie’s rib platters which range in price from $11.99 to $28.99 for a rib ‘feast.”
