#96 - Good Food, With A Side Of History

A visit to Professors Diner guarantees not only a good meal, but a fascinating tale of community history.

, located at 58 Indian Head Road, first opened its doors in Kings Park in 1991 and has been faithfully ever since. But it’s not just what’s on the menu that makes Professors a Kings Park destination, it’s what’s hanging on the walls.

The diner walls are filled with pictures, signs, and all kinds of memorabilia. Kevin Denis, the proprietor, recalls his first piece of memento was given to him by a customer in 1993. It was a Native American print, by M. Caroselli, wishing peace and harmony to all. Little did anyone know that this gift would be the start of what is now an eclectic collection of treasures.

When asked about his favorite item, Kevin replies, “They're all my favorite.”  Reflecting on the diner’s walls, he thoughtfully says, “The walls are the community.”

Items like the scores of school pennants donated by proud parents and excited college bound students and the many collages of long ago Kings Park Day celebrations and school reunions are all reflections of the town. Pictures of family, friends and customers cheerfully cover every nook and cranny of the diner.

Then there are the pictures of Yankee heroes such as Yogi, Reggie, Jeter, and Torre. You see, Kevin’s children are Yankee fans. Not to be overlooked, his dad was a Mets fan, so if you closely scan the walls, you'll find a picture of his dad happily donning a Mets cap.

Don Lotten, a long time resident, says he’s been coming to Professors for as long as he can remember. “Every time I come in, there is something new to see,” says Don, like the recently acquired autograph of New York Islander legend Pat LaFontaine, who signed right on the wall.

Judy Thiele and Lynne Gudzik, two long time diner customers that are warmly referred to as one half of “Kevin’s Golden Girls,” say although they enjoy everything on the walls, there is something even more special about Professor's. Judy explains, “It’s what you don't see that is really important. You don't see how generous and loving Kevin is – helping people in need, quietly and without fanfare.”

So if you are looking for a good meal with an atmosphere that sparks memories and conversation, visit Professors Diner and don't forget to check out the walls.
