Where Are Kings Park's Most Ignored Stop Signs?

Stop signs are not optional, but they're sometimes treated as if they are.

There are hundreds of stop signs in Kings Park, but unfortunately, too often are they completely ignored by folks in a rush.

These "stop-tional" signs are the ones that drivers treat more as a suggestion than a command. The ones in which a car comes down the road, slightly slows down and then accelerates through the stop sign.

Do you know of a location where a stop sign is frequently rolled through or ignored?

Share where it is in the comments section, below.

Pick any street along the east side Indian Head from the deli south, Stattel, Shay, Peary, Cortez and Bruce. I walk that nearly every morning with the pups and have had numerous close calls with drivers who just look south as they approach the stop signs and if it's clear just blow right onto Indian Head. Forget about stopping to let a pedestrian cross, hardly ever happens.

People use Hudson Drive as an alternate drive through to avoid the lights and they blow through the stop signs at an extremely high rate of speed, sooner or later a fatality will occur.

Joe Bruce The 4 way stop sign at Old Commack Road and Eighth Avenue- Many vehicles traveling East or West on OCR, enter this intersection well in excess of the posted speed limit, without even attempting to slow down, with no regard for other vehicles. This is an accident waiting to happen, and with limited police presence, will occur sooner rather than later

Lawrence Rd. & Cusick Ave. People seem to thing this is an optional stop sign but it is not! There are so many kids in this neighborhood as well as people walking their dogs and pushing strollers. People of Kings Park, you need to SLOW DOWN before a tragedy occurs!!!

Aspen Road and Washincton Drive

When you pay cops twice what you should, and you have half as many cops as you need, then you have to use stop sign to try to control drivers. Anybody remember the last time they saw a radar 'trap' in our area? Not enough cops! Wake up!!
KP LIslander August 14, 2012 at 02:44 PM
Yeah, and when you rightfully yell at them to highlight the fact that they are wrong in the first place, they either look at you strangely with a surprised look of disbelief as if you are the one with a problem. Or they give you the finger, as if they somehow wrongfully choose to think that you don't have right to tell them that they are wrong when in fact one does have that right, especially if these drivers are in the wrong in the first place (but yet at the same time these drivers choose to think that it is OK for them to disregard a STOP sign). Or worse, they would even stop and take issue with the fact that I would be telling them that they are wrong, as if they think it is OK for them to do whatever they want even if it is wrong, but yet don't like hearing or don't think that anyone else can or should tell them that they are wrong, despite the fact that their wrongful actions could result in a disastrous outcome. What is wrong with these F%$*ing idiots? There are kids that live on that corner and there are many people that walk, jog or bike in that area and cross Boxwood Drive at that intersection. It is only a matter of time that someone is going to get injured, or worse, killed by some inconsiderate, careless driver. And then it will be too late.

I agree completely Paula. That woukld make this list considerably shorter.

What about also talking about Right on Red. It seems driver do not understand that they must come to a complete stop and yield to the drivers that have the green. Most drivers blow right through the light without slowing down and looking.

YESSSSSS!!!!! If an officer sat for 3 hours he could give out his mothly quota in tickets!!!!!
Dave Adams August 14, 2012 at 06:08 PM
Fred, we'd need 1000 more pages for the Right on Red law violations, even where there's a sign stating NO right on red, many drivers ignore them. It's those precious seconds to get where there are going 1 second faster and you usually see them sitting at the next light in traffic, no further along.

All of Rumford rd, pick a stop sign ! Odds are you have someone on your bumper blasting their horn because you did stop ! Even worse at 2pm on a school day !
J August 14, 2012 at 09:09 PM
Aspen and Woodland AND there is a preschool on that corner! People using Aspen to bypass the St. Johnland traffic light barely brake at the stop sign. They cannot see west on Woodland either so they have no idea what is coming. We need a 4-way stop. Not that anyone will pay attention!
Liz August 14, 2012 at 09:34 PM
It seems that, to many drivers, "right on red" means they have the right-of-way at a red light! I really don't think they know any better. Or they are too busy talking on their phones to notice the red light.

Drive a school bus for just one day, People think it is OK to drive right thru a stopped school bus with all of the reds going & the stop sign out !!!
CJ August 15, 2012 at 01:48 PM
Twin Oaks is awful. I live in that neighborhood, always stop completely, and I actually had a guy honk at me, and then proceed to start yelling about why I am stopping "in the middle of the f*ing road" when I stopped at all the stop signs.
Debbie August 15, 2012 at 02:47 PM
The corner of Lawrence Rd. and Kim Pl. Last week when I stopped, a car actually went around me without even slowing down!
kevin August 15, 2012 at 03:14 PM
There are 2 stop signs frequently ignored on King Rd. The first at Mina Pl. and King Rd. the second is at Vine Rd. and King Rd. A bus stop located there and children playing on such a residential street with constant disregard for the stop signs is a sure recipe for disaster.
KP Mom August 15, 2012 at 06:09 PM
I have witnessed people driving through a stop sign and passing a bus with flashing red lights while kids were getting off the bus on Ashland Drive. Its just ridiculous.
KP LIslander August 15, 2012 at 08:11 PM
Maybe if drivers saw others taking pictures and videotaping them while blowing though STOP signs and buses with red flashing lights, they may possibly think twice about why it is that people are photographing them. Then again, maybe not since these same individuals obviously don't give a damn about what anyone else thinks anyway in the first place. All the same, it certainly can't hurt to photograph them anyway for what it's worth, if not for anything else, maybe it will help to piss them off as they are apparently deserving of at least that. Feel free & don't hesitate to take pics and post them here.
new guy August 15, 2012 at 08:38 PM
@kpislander....I agree with you, but I would use caution when photographing anyone. You really don't know who or what your dealing with these days. It's not like it used to be when you would be able to shame people into doing the right thing. When I see someone behind me driving too fast or looking like they are in a rush, I just slow down and make sure I stop good and long at stop signs. That drives tem folks crazy.
new guy August 15, 2012 at 08:46 PM
Also, I see your concerned about the boxwood/lawrence road stop Sign. In that area there has been some recent vandalism and thefts at houses and vehicles. I would suggest taking pics of vehicles that park in the overnight. They are all usually kids that are in the pysch center. Boxwood, gristmill, landview and carriage. Also near the San remo school. Then keep calling the state park police and Suffolk county police.
KP LIslander August 15, 2012 at 09:21 PM
I do the same thing about taking extra time at stop signs when I see someone behind me driving too fast or tailgating. Regarding the cars parking on Boxwood, Gristmill, Landview, etc. (which according to the police is not illegal since it is a public road) & going into the pysch center & trespassing at night (which is illegal) - I have repeatedly called the NYS OMH security (in the past), more recently the NYS OPRHP security as well as Suffolk County Police numerous times over the past ten years. Nothing ever gets done about it. Nothing changes and the same old nonsense continues year in and year out. The police can't be bothered with what they consider to be too trivial of an issue. They have more important things to be doing than to allocate assets to sit & wait for hours on end just to catch the trespassers in the act of exiting the Psych Center grounds to go back to their vehicles. Yet I'm sure if it was on Supervisor Vecchio's block or on the Suffolk County Police Commissioner Jack Fitzpatrick's block that this was occurring on, then such BS would not continue unabated for as long as it has. It is a strange thing but I have heard that sometimes some of these cars somehow exhibit having flat tires after parking on these blocks though. I guess there must be a lot of nails around.

HA!! I hear you loud and clear.
Doug Weinacht August 15, 2012 at 11:27 PM
You should know! You used to blow through those all the time in your younger days!
Walter Keenan August 16, 2012 at 01:46 AM
Ashland has become a speedway! I've been doing 25 and slowing things down when I am driving to and from my home. I have been almost hit 2 times this year turning into my driveway, personally I've had enough of the people driving up and down Ashland like it's a highway.
Walter Keenan August 16, 2012 at 01:47 AM
Agree - see my post above.
Rose August 17, 2012 at 04:02 PM
Dear Patch. Could you please forward this scary list of our under policed town to the proper police authorities. It's become a documented fact that SCPD priorities are their money & benefits.
Eileen Madden August 20, 2012 at 12:00 AM
I forgot to mention that 5th Ave & Eugene Drive is a 4 way stop & only 1 out of 10 makes a stop @ any given time.
